TRAINING & FELLOWSHIPS

A residency that circled the globe.

From intern to Fellow of two Royal Colleges, in ten years.

1984–1995

Training and Early Career

Dr Robinson studied medicine at the University of Sydney, completing a Bachelor of Science (Medicine) with Distinction in 1984, before going on to complete his medical degree (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) in 1987. His early research, undertaken at Sydney Eye Hospital, examined long-term outcomes following trabeculectomy surgery (an operation that lowers pressure inside the eye) for glaucoma (a condition that damages the optic nerve, usually caused by high eye pressure), and was published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Ophthalmology in 1993. He then completed his specialist registrar training through the Sydney Eye Hospital training scheme.

1996–1997

Corneal Fellowships

To deepen his expertise in corneal disease (conditions affecting the eye’s clear front surface), Dr Robinson undertook two corneal fellowships. The first was at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne, under Professor Hugh Taylor. He was then awarded the Alcon Royal Australian Ophthalmologists Travelling Scholarship, which took him to Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem to train under Professor Joseph Frucht. On completing this training in 1997, he was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (FRANZCO). This advanced training shaped the corneal and refractive focus that has defined his practice since.

1997–Present

In Practice

Since establishing his Bondi Junction practice in 1997, Dr Robinson has performed more than 8,000 laser vision and cataract procedures. He has also carried out corneal transplant surgery and pterygium surgery throughout this period. His approach is to identify which procedure is best suited to each patient’s eyes rather than applying the same treatment to every case. This approach is informed by close to three decades of surgical experience across a broad range of conditions. He remains an active member of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, and participates in the College’s Continuing Medical Education Scheme. He has also presented to optometrists on corneal cross-linking (a treatment that strengthens the cornea to slow progressive thinning), laser cataract technology and refractive surgery techniques as part of the Optometry Board’s continuing education program.
